If you’ve stepped onto a dance floor in Sydney anytime in the last decade, chances are Rafsan Nissan—better known as DJ ROUGH SUN—was the one controlling the room. Starting his journey in Bangladesh back in 2006, he has since evolved into the definitive Number 1 DJ for the Bangladeshi community in Australia and a Top 5 Bollywood DJ in Sydney. We sat down with the veteran selector to talk about super-clubs, cultural festivals, and what it takes to survive 15 years in the music industry.
Interviewer: Rafsan, it’s wild to look at your resume. You started all the way back in 2006 in Bangladesh, and now you’ve clocked over 10,000 live hours behind the decks. How does that journey feel when you look back on it?
Rafsan Nissan: Honestly, it’s a bit surreal. When you’re grinding it out week after week, you don’t really count the hours. But looking back at 15-plus years of doing this, it’s been an incredible ride. Representing my culture and being known as the top Bangladeshi DJ here in Australia is a massive honor, but I also love that I get to cross over. I can play a massive Bollywood night one weekend and then jump into commercial or deep house the next. It keeps things fresh.
Interviewer: You’ve played basically every iconic room in Sydney—Marquee, the Ivy Sun Room, Cargo Bar, Zeta Bar, and your residencies at Home Bar and 3 Wise Monkeys. What have been some of the absolute peak moments for you?
Rafsan Nissan: The super-clubs are always a massive rush. The energy in a room like Marquee or Home Bar is just undeniable. But honestly, making the finals for the Your Shot Australia competition in 2016 was a huge turning point for me personally; it just validated a lot of the hard work. Also, doing the Bengali New Year festivals at places like Fairfield Showground and Sydney Olympic Park. When you’re playing to a crowd of thousands celebrating their heritage, the vibe is just pure magic.
Interviewer: You’ve also shared the stage with a really wild mix of artists. Trance heavyweights, Indian superstars, Bangladeshi rock legends…
Rafsan Nissan: Yeah, that’s the beauty of having a versatile library! One night I’m supporting trance legends like Thrill Seekers and Alex Morph, and the next I’m playing alongside massive global acts like Ayusshmann Khurrana or DJ Suketu. And then getting to share the stage with hometown legends from Bangladesh like SOULS and Warfaze—those are the pinch-me moments.
Interviewer: 10,000 hours is a lot of time to learn how to read a room. What’s the secret to keeping a crowd locked in?
Rafsan Nissan: It all comes down to rapport and being able to pivot instantly. Whether I’m doing a massive uni party at Macquarie, a corporate gig for MYER where everything needs to be strictly clean and professional, or dropping 90s hip-hop at a pub, you have to feel the room. If a track isn’t working, you switch it up without hesitating. That’s what those 10,000 hours buy you—instincts.
